The Navy League was formed in 1902 in New York with the cooperation, and personal funding of President Theodore Roosevelt, as a civilian organization that would speak for the Navy and carry its message to the American People.

Who is eligible for membership?  Any American citizen interested in seapower or supporting our sea services, (Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Merchant Marine) is eligible for membership. Active duty military are not eligible for membership, but their spouses and family are eligible.

For over 100 years, the Navy League has grown to encompass a worldwide organization with more than 70,000 members in 350 councils, including nearly 250 corporate and numerous community affiliate members. The organization is supported by a professional headquarters staff located in Arlington, Virginia.

The Navy League is unique among military-oriented associations in that it is a civilian organization which supports all of the maritime services: the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and U.S. -flag Merchant Marine.

• The objective and purpose of the Navy League of the United States is to educate and motivate the American people to support our maritime capabilities, services, and personnel.

• The Navy League has compiled an impressive record of accomplishments by members who are recognized for their integrity, patriotism, and community service.

• The Navy League has very effective and results oriented youth programs, which include support of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, NROTC (Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps), NJROTC (Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training),  and the Navy League Scholarship Program.

• Individual Councils are involved in a variety of activities ranging from seminars and public speakers to scholarship programs and a wide range of family support services for the military units located in their vicinities.

• Many Councils participate in awards programs by which outstanding Sea Service personnel are recognized for achievements. Some Councils have adopted ships and shore installations; others have planned, executed, and underwritten the ceremonies connected with the commissioning of new Navy Ships.

• The Navy League publishes SEA POWER Magazine and the ALMANAC OF SEAPOWER. Subscriptions to both are included in your Navy League membership. We are pleased to invite you to join us.
